Plasmons in spin-orbit coupled two-dimensional hole gas systems

چکیده
We study the dynamical dielectric function of a two-dimensional hole gas, exemplified on [001] GaAs and InAs quantum wells, within the Luttinger model extended to the two lowest subbands including bulk and structure inversion asymmetric terms. The plasmon dispersion shows a pronounced anisotropy for GaAsand InAs-based systems. In GaAs this leads to a suppression of plasmons due to Landau damping in some orientations. Due to the large Rashba contribution in InAs, the lifetime of plasmons can be controlled by changing the electric field. This effect is potentially useful in plasmon field effect transistors as previously proposed for electron gases.

Oscillation of spin polarization in a two-dimensional hole gas under a perpendicular magnetic field
Spin-charge coupling is studied for a strongly confined two-dimensional hole gas subject to a perpendicular magnetic field. The study is based on spin-charge coupled drift-diffusion equations derived from quantum-kinetic equations in an exact manner. The spin-orbit interaction induces an extra out-of-plane spin polarization. This contribution exhibits a persistent oscillatory pattern in the str...
متن کاملQuantum Interference Control of Ballistic Magneto- resistance in a Magnetic Nanowire Containing Two Atomic- Size Domain Walls
The magnetoresistance of a one-dimensional electron gas in a metallic ferromagnetic nanowire containing two atomic-size domain walls has been investigated in the presence of spin-orbit interaction. The magnetoresistance is calculated in the ballistic regime, within the Landauer-Büttiker formalism. It has been demonstrated that the conductance of a magnetic nanowire with double domain walls...
متن کاملSpin thermoelectrics in a disordered Fermi gas
We study the connection between the spin-heat and spin-charge response in a disordered Fermi gas with spin-orbit coupling. It is shown that the ratio between the above responses can be expressed as the thermopower S = −(πkB )2T σ ′/3eσ times a number Rs which depends on the strength and type of the spin-orbit couplings considered. The general results are illustrated by examining different two-d...
متن کاملConserved spin quantity in strained hole systems with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling
We derive an effective Hamiltonian for a (001)-confined quasi-two-dimensional hole gas in a strained zincblende semiconductor heterostructure including both Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling. In the presence of uniaxial strain along the 〈110〉 axes, we find a conserved spin quantity in the vicinity of the Fermi contours in the lowest valence subband. In contrast to previous works, this ...
